The antidote is starting small and measuring reality. Build only the must-haves. Launch to real users as quickly as possible. Watch what they actually do, not what you predicted they'd do. Then build the should-haves based on evidence rather than intuition.

This requires accepting that you might be wrong about important things. That's uncomfortable. It's also the only way to avoid spending months building features that gather dust.

The Price Tag Trap

Three quotes arrive for the same project: $8,000, $25,000, and $50,000. The temptation to choose the cheapest is overwhelming. Same software, different price, easy choice.

Six months later, the $8,000 project has cost $30,000 in bug fixes, patches, and workarounds. The code is a maze that nobody wants to touch. Documentation doesn't exist. The original developer moved on and isn't responding to emails. And the system still doesn't quite work right.

The $25,000 quote would have delivered clean code, proper documentation, automated tests, and a smooth handoff. The math only becomes obvious in hindsight.

Price differences reflect real differences in approach. Cheaper quotes often mean fewer hours, which means either fewer features or less attention to quality. They might indicate copy-paste code from previous projects, shoehorned into your requirements. They might reflect the absence of documentation, testing, or thoughtful architecture.

Projects that select vendors primarily on price often end up spending more in the long run. The initial savings get eaten by bug fixes, workarounds, and eventually rewrites.

The solution is understanding what you're paying for. Ask to see previous work. Ask about their approach to documentation and testing. Talk to their previous clients. Cheap development combined with expensive maintenance is the most expensive option of all.

The Iceberg of True Cost

When a software project fails, the money spent on development is just the visible tip. Below the surface lurks much more.

There's the time lost: six to twelve months that could have been spent on something that worked. There's the opportunity cost: competitors who moved ahead while you were stuck. They start small. Instead of building everything, they identify the minimum viable product and launch that first. Real users provide real feedback. Assumptions get tested. The second phase of development is informed by evidence, not guesswork.

Here's a quick diagnostic. Answer honestly.

Do you have a written requirements specification? Do you know exactly who your user types are? Are your features prioritized as must, should, could, and won't?
